Terms of use
The agreement between you and us
Short, and in plain words. If a term here would surprise you, we have written it wrong — tell us.
Last reviewed 8 August 2026.
Who this agreement is with
These terms are between you and ThreeSafe. They apply whether you have registered a family or are simply using the site to look up a child you have found. Registering an account means you accept them.
You must be 18 or over to register a family. The service is for use in the United Kingdom.
What the service does
We give your family a three-word phrase. If someone enters that phrase and your child’s first name, we send a message to each emergency contact you have added and confirmed, containing the finder’s name, mobile number and stated location.
It is free for families and always will be. There is nothing to buy, and we do not sell anything about you.
ThreeSafe does not supervise, locate or safeguard anyone. It shortens a reunification. It is not a substitute for supervision, for a venue’s procedure, or for the emergency services. In an emergency, call 999. The safeguarding statement sets out the limits in full.
What we ask of you
- Keep your phrase reasonably private. Treat it as you would a house key. Do not print it where it faces outwards on a bag or a coat.
- Only add contacts who have agreed to be contacted, and only numbers and addresses you have permission to give us.
- Keep your contacts current. A number that no longer works is the most likely reason this service fails you.
- Do not use the lookup for anything other than a child you are actually with. Every attempt is logged.
- Do not attempt to probe, script or overload the service, or to work backwards from what it returns.
If we see the service being misused we may suspend an account or block an address, and where a child may be at risk we will pass what we hold to the police or the local authority.
If you are looking up a child
You do not need an account and you are not signed up to anything. Two things apply.
- The first step is to find a member of staff. The lookup is a supplement to that, not a replacement for it.
- The name, number and location you give are passed to the child’s family so they can reach you, and are kept for 12 months as a record of the reunification. Give a number that works.
You are told nothing about the family. That is deliberate, and it does not change.
Availability, and what we do not promise
We will try to keep the service running and fast, particularly the lookup. We do not promise it will always be available. It depends on the internet, on mobile networks, on message delivery by third parties, and on you having signal.
We specifically do not promise that:
- a message will arrive, or arrive quickly;
- a contact will see it, or answer;
- your child will remember the phrase;
- a person who finds your child will think to use it, or will give truthful details.
Plan as though none of it will work. If it does, it will have saved you time you would not otherwise have had.
Liability
We do not exclude or limit our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit. Nothing here affects your rights as a consumer.
Beyond that, and because the service is provided free of charge: we are not liable for losses arising from the service being unavailable, from a message not arriving, from a contact not answering, or from anything done by a person who finds your child. We are liable for our own failure to look after your data properly, and the privacy notice sets out what we do about that.
Ending your account
You can close your account at any time by writing to privacy@threesafe.org. We delete your phrase, your contacts and your children’s name checks. Records of alerts already raised are kept for the rest of their 12 months, because a venue may need them, and are then deleted too.
We may close an account that is being used to misuse the service, or if we stop running ThreeSafe. If we stop, we will give families at least 30 days’ notice so nobody is relying on a phrase that no longer works.
Law and changes
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and its courts have jurisdiction.
If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will email registered families and update the date at the top of this page. Carry on using the service and you accept the change; if you would rather not, close the account.
