Accessibility statement

A person using this site may be outdoors, in a crowd, holding a stranger’s child, on a bad connection, and frightened. Accessibility here is not a compliance exercise — it is the same work as making it usable at all.

How accessible this site is

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 at level AA across the whole service, and we hold the lookup flow — the part someone uses in an emergency — to a higher standard than the rest.

You should be able to:

  • use the entire service with a keyboard alone;
  • use it with a screen reader;
  • zoom to 200 per cent, or use a 320 pixel-wide screen, without losing content or having to scroll sideways;
  • complete a lookup with JavaScript turned off or still loading;
  • read every control without relying on colour to tell them apart.

Choices we made deliberately

  • The typeface is Atkinson Hyperlegible. It was designed by the Braille Institute to make characters maximally distinguishable from each other. Somebody transcribing words a distressed child just said cannot afford to confuse an l for an I.
  • Every word comes with a pictogram. A child who cannot yet read can still read their own card, and the glyph never replaces the word — both are always present.
  • Colour never carries meaning on its own. Every status has a written label. Red appears nowhere on this site except next to a reference to 999.
  • Touch targets in the emergency flow are larger than the minimum, because the person using them may have shaking hands.
  • There is no motion, anywhere, in the emergency flow — regardless of your system settings, because movement reads as alarm. Elsewhere, motion respects a reduced-motion preference.
  • Word order does not have to be remembered. The three words can be entered in any order. This removes a whole category of recall and sequencing failure at no cost.
  • Autocorrect is turned off on the word fields. A phone changing MOON to MOOD is a real failure mode.

Known problems

This statement is not yet based on a full independent audit. It describes our own testing. An external accessibility audit is outstanding and is on the list to complete before public launch.

Problems we already know about:

  • The web font does not yet have a metric-matched fallback, so text shifts slightly when the font finishes loading.
  • We have not yet tested with speech recognition software such as Dragon.
  • We have not yet had the wording reviewed by anyone with expertise in learning disability or in English as an additional language, and the service is currently English only.
  • The printed family card has not been tested for large print or braille production.

We would rather list these than let you discover them. If one of them is blocking you, tell us and we will prioritise it.

How we tested

Testing so far is our own: keyboard-only walkthroughs of every flow, VoiceOver on macOS and iOS, automated checks in the browser, and layout checks at 320 pixels and at 200 per cent zoom. The lookup flow is also checked with JavaScript disabled.
